Domain transfer means changing the company handling its registration. The domain name and its owner can remain unchanged. Transfer is not the same as moving website or email files to another server.
Why is the domain being transferred?
The reason may be a more convenient panel, better service, a better renewal price, organizing multiple domains on one account or the need to take full control after changing the contractor. Before making a decision, it is worth comparing not only the transfer price, but also the cost of subsequent renewals, the scope of security and the method of obtaining assistance.
What is needed?
Most often, an authorization code obtained from the current registrar is required. The subscriber's data should be up to date and the domain must not be subject to a block that prevents transfer. Some extensions have additional deadlines or confirmation procedures.
Transfer flow
- Check subscriber details, expiration date and current DNS settings.
- Get an authorization code from your current operator.
- Initiate the transfer with the new registrar.
- Confirm the operation according to the instructions sent to the contact address.
- Once completed, check your domain status, expiration date and account security.
The registrar transfer itself does not usually change the DNS servers. If the records remain the same, the website and email should function continuously. The risk occurs when the DNS zone or hosting is also changed along with the transfer. In this case, you must first recreate all records with the new operator.
Transfer security
The authorization code should not be given to people who are not involved in the operation. After the transfer, it's a good idea to change your password, enable multi-factor authentication, and remove the previous contractor's access. It is also a good practice to save a copy of your DNS settings before making any changes.
A properly prepared transfer is an administrative operation that does not have to be noticeable to users. Ownership control, complete documentation and separation of domain transfer from website and email migration are key.
