DNS

DNS, i.e. Domain Name System, connects a readable domain name with the server’s IP address. This allows the user to type the name of the page instead of remembering a string of numbers.

Top DNS records

The A record points to the server's IPv4 address, AAAA points to the IPv6 address, CNAME creates an alias, MX routes mail, and TXT stores information used for domain verification and mail security, among other things. NS records specify the servers responsible for maintaining the DNS zone.

When a record is changed, there may be a delay in seeing the update because the previous data is cached. This time depends, among other things, on the TTL setting and the infrastructure of Internet operators.

Technical significance

In internet solutions, DNS affects the operation, performance or security of the website. It is worth understanding its role before changing the configuration, because a seemingly small decision can impact the website, integrations, email and user experience.

Application in practice

Working with DNS should start with a backup, checking the environment and saving the current settings. It is best to implement changes in stages and then test them on computers and mobile devices. Documentation facilitates subsequent maintenance and transfer of the project to another administrator.
