Human in the Loop

A process model in which a person reviews, approves or takes over selected decisions supported by AI.

What the term really means

A process model in which a person reviews, approves or takes over selected decisions supported by AI.

How it works in practice

A person should take over when a decision is irreversible, information is incomplete or the consequence of error exceeds the benefit of automation.

The decision to make before implementation

An approval step must show context and the proposed action; otherwise the operator merely clicks “approve”.

How to verify that it works

Track wait time, correction rate, post-escalation quality and whether the system recognises its limits. Compare results with an agreed baseline and review routine cases, difficult exceptions and human hand-offs separately. A practical Human in the Loop test should have an owner, a review date and a recorded example of an outcome the team will not accept.

The PAR HOUSE Agency approach

We approach Human in the Loop from the workflow rather than a tool demonstration. An approval step must show context and the proposed action; otherwise the operator merely clicks “approve”. We then build a small measurable scope, record assumptions and expand only after quality review.
