Agentic Commerce and the future of online shopping
In agentic commerce, software can help discover a product, compare variants and complete part of a purchase journey. The merchant remains responsible for accurate data, fulfilment rules, acceptance of an order and the operation of its own systems.
Start with a reliable catalogue
An agent needs stable identifiers, names, descriptions, prices, currency, availability, variants, images and fulfilment details. Data should come from the system that actually processes orders, rather than a separate table updated only occasionally.
Separate discovery from transaction
Product discovery, cart creation, delivery choice and payment are distinct states with their own failures and conditions. A recommendation is not consent to charge, and availability shown during discovery is not an inventory reservation.
Keep the merchant in control
The Agentic Commerce Protocol specification assumes the seller validates the cart, calculates conditions, accepts or declines the order and handles payment through its processor. The integration must communicate each state clearly to the user.
Documentation: Agentic Commerce Protocol.
Test changing situations
We cover a changed price, missing variant, quantity limit, expired session, unavailable delivery method, required authentication and declined payment. Retrying a request must not accidentally create a second order.
Deploy a limited scope
We begin with one category and scenario. We compare data consistency, escalations, abandoned sessions and errors. Only after a stable review do we extend the catalogue or add further stages of the journey.
