Automatically assigning SKUs and GTINs
An identifier button saves work only when clear rules support it. SKUs and GTINs have different roles and should not be arbitrary strings.
Separate identifier types
An SKU is an internal identifier under the chosen system. A GTIN identifies a trade item under GS1 rules. A barcode format and its stored number are also different concepts.
Check the variant
Read existing identifiers, the parent product and variant attributes. Do not change a correct number because the button was pressed again. Send conflicts for review.
Use an authorised allocation
Automation uses an approved SKU rule and the appropriate GTIN allocation rights. A valid check digit does not prove entitlement to a number. Do not invent random EANs for trade identification.
Documentation: GS1 — GTIN.
Protect concurrent assignment
Reservation and saving must prevent two operations taking the same number. Keep the product, number and outcome linked. A retry recognises previous completion.
Confirm system consistency
Check the chosen variant across catalogue, warehouse and connections. Distinguish assigned, existing and rejected identifiers in reports. Conflict resolution must not silently overwrite data.
