Monitoring and measuring SEO results
An SEO report should support decisions about the website. Total visits alone do not show whether we reach the right people or answer their needs.
Define the business question
Choose a goal: enquiries about a service, category sales or visits to a guide. Assign a destination and measurable action to each. Growing traffic without the relevant action needs its own diagnosis.
Create comparable segments
Separate branded and other queries, mobile and desktop, countries and languages. A site-wide average can hide a decline in the most important category.
Record a baseline
Keep the period, filters and change dates. Compare similar days and account for seasonality. A measurement change must appear in the report so that it is not mistaken for customer behaviour.
Explain differences
A search-result click and a visit recorded by analytics are different events. Check data scope, consent and measurement before drawing conclusions. Do not manually force the numbers to match.
Turn observations into work
Give each finding a hypothesis, owner and review date. Many visits but weak enquiries may justify improving the offer description rather than publishing another article.
