International SEO and hreflang
International SEO starts with useful, independent language versions. Hreflang describes relationships between their URLs, but it does not repair an incomplete translation, incorrect canonicalisation or a page unavailable for indexing.
Define the version structure first
Each language should have a stable direct URL and visible content in the correct language. We do not make all access depend on a cookie or automatic redirect. We also define whether a version differs by language, region, offer or currency.
Build reciprocal hreflang relationships
Each equivalent version lists itself and the other versions with absolute URLs. The relationship must work both ways. Where useful, we add x-default for users whose language has no dedicated version.
Documentation: Google Search Central.
Check agreement with canonical URLs
The canonical should reflect the decision that a page is independent. We do not point every language to one version when they are meant to operate separately. We check HTTP status, indexability and agreement between the language map and available URLs.
Test complete sets and exceptions
We examine a page available in every language, one missing a translation, a changed slug and a withdrawn offer. We verify the language code, return link, canonical and whether a user can switch versions without redirect loops.
Maintain the map during changes
A new page, URL migration or service withdrawal changes the relationship set. We automate checks, while reporting the exact pair and error type. The absence of a validator warning does not confirm translation quality.
