Optimising the purchase journey
Treat the purchase journey as a sequence of decisions. Each stage should provide the necessary information and retain customer choices when moving forward or back.
Map decision stages
Separate discovery, variant choice, terms, cart and completion. Record the customer question and obstacle at each point. Do not start by moving buttons arbitrarily.
Show terms at the right time
Price, availability, delivery and important conditions should be clear before commitment. An unexpected final cost calls for earlier information, not just a stronger purchase prompt.
Preserve selection state
Returning to a product should not unnecessarily remove variant or quantity. Test refreshes, form errors and delivery changes. Explain what remains saved and what needs correction.
Test difficult cases
Cover stock disappearing after addition, declined payments, invalid addresses and interruption. Use an isolated environment for these tests. A successful demonstration does not prove exception handling.
Evaluate the whole outcome
Compare completed purchases, stage abandonment and support contacts for similar traffic and devices. A shorter form is useful only if order fulfilment remains correct.
